  • Jailed in America, a documentary by Academy Award-winning director Roger Ross Williams, 2018. This documentary continues to be an urgent reminder that the criminal justice system’s use of pretrial detention, driven by unaffordable bail, functions as a form of poverty punishment that destabilizes families, skews case outcomes, and perpetuates racial and economic inequality. To illustrate this point Williams uses a mix of reporting, courtroom footage, interviews, and personal stories.
